We Are Calderdale is an annual event in Calderdale which has taken place every year since 2018 (apart from in 2021, when the event was broadcast live from my house, due to the Covid pandemic). It's a fantastic event for local organisations from all sectors to come together to celebrate everything that's great about Calderdale, and share ideas and inspiration for the year ahead.
Within my role at Calderdale Council, I have been heavily involved in the production of the events since they started, leading on tech and AV, digital content and engagement.
Producing We Are Calderdale is always a technical challenge, but good fun all the same. My role includes; producing and editing films to premiere at the event, producing VOGs, audio stings and stage entrances, arranging AV tech setup, and film and social media coverage of the event.
It may come as no surprise that lots of recces, technical rehearsals and checks take place well in advance of the main event, to make sure everything runs smoothly!
Every year I challenge myself to make the technical production even better than the year before. Although it's a challenge, it's always really rewarding to see the event come together.
From a technical viewpoint there's quite a lot to think about to make sure that multiple systems work together; the sound desk feeds the video cameras, presenters and host lapels and handhelds feed into the main sound desk; source switcher feeds a master presentation and videos, and even using VOGs to make sure we're on time.
It's an enjoyable challenge!
The first film I produced for this year's event was 'We Are Culturedale', which features some of the amazing work of Calderdale's cultural organisations, and talks about their ambitions for the Year of Culture in 2024.
‘Our stories’ features stories of people living and working in Calderdale - people from all walks of life - who kindly agreed to be interviewed for this film.
It was lovely to meet so many people who shared their stories with me!
This year, I produced VOGs which played at the start of the event, and again after the refreshment break.
It was great to work with Yorkshire voice artist, Ritchie Clarke again, who recorded the short script. His voice was then edited and equalised before adding music. Have a listen!
